The Changing Face of Memorial

June 2006
Memorial's Josh and Jack Flower, with friend Hannah Paur, feed the ducks at a neighborhood pond.

On any given afternoon, you’ll find young families—complete with dog and stroller—wandering down the streets of Memorial. A sort of mecca for young families, this area is a haven for those with small children. The neighborhood scene didn’t …

Have you ever wanted to fly like an eagle or soar like a bird? Well, believe it or not, each weekend there are several area residents doing just that as members of the Soaring Club of Houston.

Soaring—a type of flying—is done in a small engineless plane called a sailplane or glider. Aerodynamically designed to move efficiently through the air, …

It was no surprise when Dad, Ken Kades, picked up the tab.  Soon after, Jennifer and Dr. Alexander Butkevich marched …

Family RV trips

For some, living in a small confined space, preparing all your own meals, and dumping your own waste system does not sound like a vacation. But those who have “roughed it” in an RV claim to have harvested some of the richest memories of family bonding imaginable. The experience is even played out in the summer blockbuster, …

Last December, work took me and six colleagues to Mumbai, the city formerly known as Bombay. Our head and neck oncology counterparts there treated us like Rajas, and since that time I have been dreaming of spicy vindaloos and curries. Dining in the Indian subcontinent, one quickly understands the allure of the spices that drew European adventurers …

Greg

The world’s most famous cities have an icon—that singular snapshot you see and know exactly where you are. Paris has its Eiffel Tower. San Francisco has its Golden Gate. New York has the Statue of Liberty.

If Houston ever had such a thing, it would have been the Astrodome—now a lifeless relic. Not the sort of image most Houstonians want …

A Summer to Remember

June 2006
Linda Knapp changed her mind a few times before coming up with this first-place floral arrangement.

The Memorial Drive Garden Club had plenty of desperate gardeners this year.  And why would this year be different than any other year?  The 2006 humorous flower show theme, Desperate Gardeners, was selected by the board members, “desperate” to keep the group of fun loving women inspired.

Once the home for the flower show was selected, photographs were taken of …
