Savor the road trip

Prepare yourself for a road trip: 50 states, 297 days on the road, 24,030 miles in the motorhome, 14,980 miles in the convertible, 975 miles on ferries, 6,000 miles on airplanes, totaling 45,985 miles. This is the odyssey that I took with my family took when I was 10 years old. My experiences on this journey were the basis for creating my cookbook, Tastes of the States, that I’m in the process of marketing.

The idea for this project sprang, not only from my family’s unique journey, but also from my love of cooking. This love for cooking evolved from my experiences in the kitchen when I was younger, attending cooking schools, and later teaching cooking schools.

Undertaking the writing and publishing of my own cookbook began four years ago and has been my summer job for the past three years. These summers were filled with researching, collecting, personalizing, and testing recipes as well as producing the cookbook. This was monotonous at times but worthwhile. A very talented friend, Bree Hylton, created the artwork for the cover, which was the finishing touch for the cookbook.

After writing the book, the next step was the grueling task of publishing and printing the cookbook. I decided to self-publish my cookbook, which meant starting my own publishing company, Wacky Anna Publishing. Through the publishing company, I acquired an ISBN Number, a Library of Congress Number, and other items necessary for publishing a book. Finding a local printer took some time and preparing the document for the printer was challenging. However, the day I received the boxes full of finished cookbooks was extremely rewarding. Through this experience I’ve had the opportunity to see the entire spectrum of what is involved in publishing.

When I’m not marketing and promoting Tastes of the States, I’m busy being a senior at Houston Christian High School.

Editor’s Note: Tastes of the States is now available at Blue Willow Bookshop in Memorial.
