College is about many things. It’s about new experiences, learning new things, and making new friends. For me, it’s also about getting the experience now to pay off for the future. I am majoring in Sports Management, and I feel like it is important for me to get experience in the field of sports. With my dream of someday working in the front office of a sports organization, I realize that the more experience I get, the better chance I have of reaching my goal. I have taken my first year in college to experiment with new jobs, and get experience in the field of sports.
My philosophy is simple: Try everything, because you never know what will come of it. For a person my age, I believe I have quite a full resume. It’s safe to say that I’m somewhat of an entrepreneur. In my first full year of college, I was the campus representative for AMP Energy Drink, and was an intern for IMG College- a branch of the same agency who represents Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning. As an AMP Energy representative, I spent much of my time promoting the AMP Energy brand, making it a popular drink on campus. I spent many days as the IMG intern helping with the UIL Texas State High School Championships, and various other events. To me, both of these were rather simple, and accomplished many things. AMP gave me the good cash that a college student always needed, along with some valuable marketing experience. IMG College gives me that resume builder that everyone should have by the time they leave college.
My philosophy has not changed throughout the summer, even though I do enjoy being lazy. I spent all of 2nd semester e-mailing and calling companies about sports jobs in Houston. I finally found one that was right for me, as a Marketing Consultant for Stinger Sports Marketing. Although they specialize in Sports Racing, I knew I could help expand the company to other sports and cities. I work from home trying to help promote new racing events, and will continue to do so in hopes of great success. Although hard, I have a fun time working for a company like this, because it is something I am truly passionate about. I hope that I can help the company grow in the future.
The reason I wrote this blog today is to preach a simple philosophy about keeping an open mind. I’ve kept an open mind, and have been able to do many things in college. I’ve worked for 2 or 3 other companies not listed, that I tried out, and that weren’t for me. In my sophomore year, I plan on continuing to experiment, working for sports companies, and possibly starting a website with my friend. These may pay off, and they may not. However, one thing is certain: You won’t get anywhere in life unless you take risks and try new things.
