No trivial pursuit. Erik Hardin met Lisa Sellinger in 2009 with a group of mutual friends when they went to a bar to play trivia. Their game led to a wedding April 28 at The Brown Palace Hotel in Denver. Since the couple’s first date was at a movie where they shared popcorn, they had a gourmet popcorn table for the 150 guests. The parents of the couple, Susan and Craig Sellinger and Karen and Steve Hardin, were popping with joy. Partiers made lasting memories in a photo booth with an array of props. After Lisa takes the bar exam, the couple will cruise the Mediterranean and tour Italy.

Two guys bleed orange. Dennis Johnston and Rick Kruger, golf buddies and childhood friends since grade school at St. Cecilia’s on Joan of Arc, celebrated their 60th birthdays together in May. The shindig was at the Krugers’ farm near San Felipe, Texas, which is near Sealy. Since the guys are Longhorn graduates, Dennis’ wife, Mary, baked, and Rick’s wife, Kerry, helped serve a three-level, three-flavored, burnt-orange and white cake. The 120 guests feasted on barbecue and listened to the Mike Clifford Band from Austin. Fifty piñatas were hung around the tennis court where the band played, and the partiers carried on.

Golfers only. When Trey Odom realized the Houston Country Club member/guest golf tournament was entertaining the golfers on Thursday and Saturday but not Friday, he decided to have his own “Invitational.” He and his wife Stacey brought in their favorite musician, Kevin Danzig, from Vail. Ninety guests dined on pulled-pork sliders on sweet-potato biscuits, mini Monte Cristo sandwiches, tuna tartare on won tons, mini shrimp quesadillas and a multitude of desserts. In the crowd were Bill and Pam Sengleman, Steve and Kitty Oldham, Paul and Pam Frazier, Trey and Lynette Snider, and Bill and Suzanne Pritchard. Although there weren’t any golf clubs there, everyone had a “swinging” time.

Contemporary move. Samantha, Justin, 4-year-old Bardo and 19-year-old Jai Bucknell moved to a contemporary home in Hedwig Village in May. They had barely unpacked when they took off for Club Med Cancun for Memorial Day. Jai attends Arizona State. Although they are originally from London, they have lived in the United States for 13 years. Their recent move is from a home north of I-10.

It’s not all true, but some of it is! Stephanie Celeste Perkins, who is an educational writer and editor, was inspired to veer into fiction. Her first romance tale called The End of the Dating Moratorium was recently self published and soon to be available on Amazon. Stephanie drew upon her own experiences from a dating moratorium a couple of years back, although her fictional character is a wedding planner. Stephanie’s wedding-consultant friend at one of Houston’s top hotels gave her additional inspiration. Judy and Dick Perkins, Stephanie’s supportive parents, will be the first to get their book signed.

A delicious trip. Dr. George and Geetha Mammen savored a variety of flavors from a culinary tour of northern Spain and southern France. They learned how to make tapas with prosciutto, anchovies and shrimp in San Sebastian. Architecture was the flavor they experienced in Barcelona and the walled medieval city of Carcassonne across the border in France. They also made a quick trip to Madrid to see the famous Prado Museum.

Garden gossip. The new board of the Hunters Creek Garden Club was announced at a spring luncheon at Guadalajara Hacienda. Mayor David Wegner talked about finding crooks, avoiding scams and the latest drainage-conflict situation with Piney Point. Rachel Messina and I planned the lively spring luncheon. Mary Ann Russell welcomed new members Ann Moss, Nancy Smith and Jennifer Pine with roses. The outgoing board members were given origami kits on behalf of former president Geetha Mammen, who was in Spain. Applause greeted new president Shelley Smaby.

Action! The lights were on, and video cameras were rolling at Tiffany and Randall Wong’s house as Jess Rogers filmed a commercial in rooms throughout the home. The recruited actors and actresses were students, including Rees and Parker Lewis, Marshall and Michael Rosenberg, Andrew Leibman, Sophie Gaylor, and Aby, Ashton and Reagan Deverka. The crew, under the direction of Jenna Jackson, filmed from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
